The
Ability Day Service will develop and provide the core elements of services
offered to people with a physical disability livi49 in West Lothian, providing a
"Centre of Excellence" in physical disability services.
Within the Ability Centre each
client will have an individual programme, which will work towards agreed
goals. This will go some way to enable clients to recognise and realise
their potential.
There will be work experience opportunities available at reception and at the cafeteria cash desk, with the potential to develop other work experience placements outwith the Ability Centre staff and Intowork, who will monitor placements and provide practical support.
There will be three distinct sections within the Ability Day Service, namely
Extended Rehabilitation
This is primarily aimed at those
people who have been experienced a change of life circumstance and who require a
time limited, focused period of rehabilitation
Personal Development
Clients will, for a time-limited period,
require a supported environment which allows them to build their self-esteem.
Quality Maintenance
Clients who have the capacity to
participate in, with adequate levels of support, a tailor-made package of
opportunities.
Community Links
In order to offer a wider range of
opportunities and to enable an increasing number of people to access them the
Ability Service will not only provide services and activities, but will support
activities already available in the community to enable people with a physical
disability to get to them.
Alongside this will be the "local" outreach support network.
There are presently 10 outreach support networks operating in community
locations around West Lothian.
The emphasis is on including people in their
community, developing their confidence and ability to participate in and access
opportunities within West Lothian foe education, sports, leisure, cultural,
employment and other community activities.
Links have been developed and strengthened with West Lothian College. The
College has been proactive in developing a course specifically targeted for
people with a physical disability. This had not been possible in the past
due to the inaccessibility of the previous building.
