Welcome to our 29th Season, the season of great changes. Thanks to a Lottery grant we will be moving to our new venue The Academy with new improved raked seating and new screen. We will also be changing the way we project films moving from 16mm to video and DVD formats with new digital projectors. We also thank Lloyds TSB for a grant to buy digital equipment to use in our community service in homes and hospitals. We hope these changes will bring improved quality and not too many teething troubles! I must give my thanks to Bob Henderson the retiring chairman of 26 years who has handed over a healthy and thriving film society. Don’t worry Bobs still working hard on the committee. Thank you for your support and we look forward to your company, enjoying the films we have chosen this season.

Programme
Mon. 24th Sept. 7.45pm
Erin Brockovich (15) 133 mins.
Director: Steven Soderbergh
Starring: Julia Roberts, Albert Finney
Based on an actual court case this film follows the investigation by Erin Brockovich (Roberts) into suspected water pollution by the Gas and Electric Company. As a feisty character, not above using her looks to gain favours Roberts turns in the best performance of her career.
Mon. 8th Oct. 7.45pm
Billy Elliot (15) 113 mins.
Director: Stephen Daldry
Starring: Julie Walters, Gary Lewis, Jamie Bell.
County Durham 1984, eleven year old Billy endures the hardship of the year long miners strike. Living with his father, brother and grandma he is sent to boxing lessons but secretly becomes fascinated by dancing. The dancing probably owes more to Riverdance than Swan Lake, but infectious performances by Julie Walters and Jamie Bell carry the film along.
Mon. 18th Feb. 7.45pm
Film to be announced
Fri. 1st March 7.45pm
Bridget Jones Diary (15) 97 mins
Director: Sharon Maguire
Starring: Renee Zellweger, Colin Firth, Hugh Grant
A great comedy following the life and times of Bridget Jones (Zellweger) conveniently recorded in her well known diary, loneliness, an increasingly tangled love life, parental pressure and jealousy are all treated with perfect comic timing by an excellent cast.
The film even boasts guest appearances by the reclusive Salman Rushdie and the publicity shy Jeffrey Archer, but contrary to internet rumour George Clooney does not put in an uncredited appearance.
Mon. 19th Nov. 7.45pm
The Dish (12) 96 mins.
Director: Rob Sitch
Starring: Sam Neill, Kevin Harrington
A true story, this light comedy explores the Australian contribution to the U.S. moon landing. Houston had a problem when they found that the only way to get the pictures from the moon landing was via an Australian dish in the outback of New South Wales.
Mon. 3rd Dec. 7.45pm
Chocolat (12) 127 mins
Director: Lasse Hallstrom
Starring: Juliette Binoche, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp.
Set in France in the 50’s, Lansquenet is a medieval village unchanged for centuries and resistant to change especially in its traditions of abstinence, penitence and moral righteousness. Enter Binoche as a red headed, unwed mother who opens a chocolate shop - in lent. Although played in English by an international cast this comedy successfully captures a typical French village atmosphere.
