WHAT WE DO

West Lothian Family Support Team provides a range of services and opportunities to families in West Lothian who have a child/children aged from birth to school leaving age with severe or complex learning disabilities.

 

library graphicINFORMATION AND ADVICE

Families are encouraged to contact staff if they wish information and advice on Welfare Rights.  A number of books on a range of topics relating to children with learning disabilities are also available in the library.

 

INDIVIDUALS WORK WITH FAMILIES

Opportunities exist for home visits by our Family Social Worker to parents who may wish to discuss particular issues or concerns.
We are in touch with a wide range of other services in West Lothian and can help parents gain access to them.

Opportunities exist for parents to meet together to discuss issues of common concern and learn about the resources available to them in West Lothian.

 

VOLUNTEERS

We recruit, train and support volunteers working within the project.  We also provide ongoing training and we reimburse any expenses that are incurred.

SITTING SERVICE

Volunteer sitters are available to allow parents to go out during the day or evening. This can be on a regular or 'one-off' basis.

SPECIAL REQUESTS

Volunteers may be available to support requests to enable parents to participate in meetings or activities usually on a one-off basis.

 

TRANSPORT

A team of volunteer drivers provide a transport service to families throughout West Lothian, primarily for travel to and from project activities.  One weeks notice is generally requested.

NEWSLETTER

The newsletter is produced four times a year and keeps people informed of what is going on in the project and other information thought to be relevant.

 

SCHOOL HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES

children playingWe run 3 play and leisure schemes per year at Easter, Summer and October holidays.  The children and young people are in groups according to ages ranging from 2 - school leaving age.  The aim is to enable children and young people to have the opportunity for enjoyment, fun and new experiences.

TRANSITION

Our Transition Worker supports young people aged 14+ and their families to begin to look at future changes eg leaving school, making post-school choices, leaving college, daytime activities, employment and future accommodation.
