The Ability Centre

West Lothian council invested £1.7m in this new resource.

The resource is for adults with disabilities, their families and carers and also for the benefit of the wider population of west Lothian.

Ability Day Service

  • Centre based occupational and therapeutic activities

The Ability Day Service will develop and provide the core elements of services offered to people with a physical disability livi49 in West Lothian, providing a "Centre of Excellence" in physical disability services.

client and an eagleWithin the Ability Centre each client will have an individual programme, which will work towards agreed goals. This will go some way to enable clients to recognise and realise their potential.

There will be work experience opportunities available at reception and the cafeteria cash desk, with the potential to develop other work experience placements outwith the Ability Centre. This initiative has been jointly developed between the Ability Centre staff and Intowork, who will monitor placements and provide practical support.

There will be four distinct sections within the Ability Centre Support Services, namely

  1. Extended Rehabilitation

This is primarily aimed at those people who have experienced a change of life circumstance and who require a time limited, focused period of rehabilitation.

  1. Personal Development

Clients will for a time-limited period, require a supported environment which allows them to build their self-esteem and confidence.

  1. Quality Maintenance

Clients who have the capacity to participate in, with adequate levels of support, a tailor-made package of opportunities.

  1. Outreach

Clients will be those who are assessed as being socially isolated and vulnerable but who are deemed to have the capacity to benefit from accessing a rang of community based activities given the appropriate levels of staffing support, advice and information. 

Community Links

In order to offer a wider range of opportunities and to enable an increasing number of people to access them the Ability Service will not only provide services and activities, but will support activities already available in the community to enable people with a physical disabilities to get to them. Alongside this will be the "local" outreachLanthorn and Mosswood clients support network. There are presently 10 outreach groups operating in community locations around West Lothian.

flower arrangingThe emphasis is on including people in their own community, developing their confidence and ability to participate in and access opportunities within West Lothian for education, sports, leisure, cultural, employment and other community activities.

Links have been developed and strengthened with West Lothian College. The college has been proactive in developing a course specifically targeted for people with a physical disability.

Community Rehabilitation 

& Brain Injury Service

The Service

The West Lothian Community Rehabilitation & Brain Injury Project is funded by Health and Social services. It provides assessment and rehabilitation for adults over the age of 16 years who are physically disabled or have suffered a brain injury.

 

The Service meet your needs

The team can address the following areas:

Activities of daily living

Mobility

Communication

Cognitive (i.e memory, problem solving)

Leisure and work

Independent living

Carers' concerns

Referral to other agencies (if appropriate)

 

What The Service do

The team carry out an assessment visit in your own home. A programme of intervention will be developed based on problems or needs identified in the assessment. This may involve:

A short period of rehabilitation based on goals

Advice and information

Referral to other agencies as appropriate
